Santorini is one of the most magical islands of Greece. It is a barren, rocky island just opposite a volcano, with black and red beaches and towns situated on high cliffs offering breathtaking views and fantastic sunsets. Santorini has a dramatic beauty as opposed to lush and green islands.

The volcano is still active, and the last eruption was in 1950, causing an earthquake that destroyed many villages on the island. The island's official name is Thira and its main town, Fira, is also the capital of the Cyclades islands. It is a cosmopolitan island and is therefore quite expensive.

The locals live mainly off agriculture and tourism. The islands largest export product is soil; 2.000.000 tons a year are used all over the world, mainly to make concrete. The Suez channel was built with this concrete for example.

Most holidaymakers stay where the beaches are, Kamari and Perissa, but these places really do not represent the island's amazing distinctiveness.

If you can, you should try to stay in Fira, Imerovigli or Oia, the towns on the cliffs, which are very beautiful and full of little cafes, shops and places of interest. There is a bus that goes to the beaches everyday, and it is much better to be in the towns in the evening and on the beaches during the day. If you stay in Monolithos you will have more peace and quiet.

Approaching the island by boat the immediate impression obtained is this is a Greek island unlike any other. The island of Santorini was formed out of the lava from the volcanic eruption in 1660 BC. The central part of the volcano sank into the sea leading to the emergence of Santorini itself and the tiny neighbouring islands of Thirasia, Palaia and Nea Kameni close by.

Today, Santorini is the only inhabited Caldera (volcano cauldron) in the world. Unlike other islands in Greece, the towns and villages sit densely on top of the massive cliffs of the Caldera and from a distance appear like snow capping the towering mountain tops. The coloured strata of the volcanic rock of these cliffs are spectacular in themselves: chocolate brown, rust red, yellow ochre, white and cream. The geological uniqueness however is not the only thing that makes Santorini a special holiday destination.

Everyone has read about the spectacular sunsets that occur on this island and the sceptic may question whether the setting sun can really appear differently here than from the neighbouring islands of Naxos or Ios. Nevertheless, the sunsets at Santorini, viewed from the Caldera, really are breathtakingly beautiful when seen as a backdrop to the volcano. The colours that streak the sky change from lilac to deep purple, from yellow to orange to red, as the golden sun sinks and becomes blood red reflecting its light on to the sea and the surrounding little islands. The eastern slopes of the island are green and fertile, even in October. This is due to the copious vineyards that grow so well in the fertile volcanic soil. The terraced slopes of the mountains use every available part of this fertile land.

Santorini main beaches have water sports. In general, Santorini beaches are wide with mainly black sand. There are also lots of currents and the waves can get very high especially at the north east side of the island. Kamari and Perissa are popular beaches with their beautiful surroundings and black sand. If you seek calmer beaches, it is better to go to Monolithos, Vlichada or Agios Georgios. For snorkelling visit Amoudi.

Santorini is quite a small island, and it is easy to get around. There are local buses to take you to most places, but of course you can also rent a car or a bike. There are also taxis on the island.
The harbour of Athinios where the ferryboats stop is connected to Fira and the rest of the island by a well made serpentine road. Driving up or down this road can be quite an experience for anyone afraid of heights. The old port of Fira under the town is used only for passengers from the cruise ships. You can also walk up or down that road (almost 900steps) or take a donkey ride all the way. There is also a cable car taking you straight to Fira. As you arrive at Athinios you can rent a car straight away from the spot. Santorini has a very good road network and a car or a bike will make your stay more convinient.

Yes, you're going to beaches and will probably be going hiking. There will also be a lot of outdoor shopping. Keep in mind, though, that you will also most probably need dressier dinner attire. That means clothes and footwear. This is especially true if you're going on a cruise. Most cruise ships have a dress code for dinner. Even on your own, though, you will definitely want to go out at night looking a little bit spiffy. It would complete the experience.

Don't go overboard and bring clothes and shoes that are too formal, though. Neither should you lug heavy suitcases of clothes and footwear. Some light pieces that you could mix and match to create night and day pieces that can go from casual to dressed up would be perfect.

For women, some swimwear, such as maillots, can double as dressy or casual tops for skirts or pants. Just make sure they're not too bare.

And please don't forget the skirt or pants. Swimwear by themselves are for the beach or pool side but are not acceptable to walk around town in even if it's a seaside town. This goes for the guys, too. Please throw something over that bare torso and those swimming trunks.

Ladies can do well with light coverups that double as dresses. If you plan to use them off the beach or pool, choose ones that are not too sheer. They should cover, after all.

Another wise choice for both sexes would be light and light-colored breathable clothes. You will thank yourself once you reach hot climes. Sunglasses and hats would also come in handy.

If your trip includes trekking or climbing, make sure you have appropriate clothes and shoes for that, as well. If inexperienced, ask for advice from experts. The right clothes and shoes are necessary not only for your comfort but also for your safety.

If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring back ups. You don't want your memories of the Mediterranean to be all fuzzy.

Never forget your camera. Bring protection for it if it's not waterproof, and bring enough batteries for it and any other gadgets. If you need to bring chargers, bring universal plug adapters and voltage converters.

Binoculars would also add a new dimension to your experience.

It's always wise to bring small packets of your own brand of toiletries, enough to last you for the entire trip. You never know if they - or any counterpart acceptable to you - would be available. To protect yourself against the sun, bring lots of sunblock and lip balm. Also guard against insects with repellant.

Always have a flashlight with you everywhere. Find a small but powerful one that you can slip into your bag or pocket.

Also find a slim wallet for your money and passport that you could have on your person almost all the time, except of course while swimming. Plan ahead on how to keep these safe otherwise.

PRNewswire reports that results of the Carlson Wagonlit Travel Associates Travel Trends Survey released this month shows Europe taking seven of the Top 20 International destinations booked by Carlson Wagonlit Travel Associates.

Topping Europe is Rome at Number Four, maintaining its previous ranking.

Mediterranean cruising rose to Number Five. Carlson explains that this is because the Mediterranean cruise gives US travellers the most for their dollars, with fixed costs for accommodations and meals while covering several locations via relaxing ship travel.

London rose one level from Number Seven to Number Eight while Paris is Number 13. Coming close is Florence/Tuscany which took one step up to Number 14.

Venice is catching up, moving up seven spots to Number 16. Frankfurt also did very well, jumping nine spots to Number 20.

Right after Christmas is bargain hunting season in the world's fashion capitals: Paris, Milan, London.

The Paris Chamber of Commerce and the Visitors Bureau has declared January 10-20 as official sale dates. Many sales last for up to six weeks, though, with up to 70% discounts. Bargain hunters recommend the Rue de Rivoli arcade and the Rue de Rennes for more affordable finds.

In Milan, sales begin on the first weekend of January on to February. Affordable designer outlets can be found in Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Corso Buenos Aires, Corso Vercelli and Corso XXII Marzo. You can also try the McArthur Glen Designer Outlet Serravalle and the shopping strips at Via Torino.

London is also well into its winter sales. If you're brave enough to join the crowds go to Kings Road in Chelsea and Knightsbridge,Covent Garden in central London and Notting Hill in west London.
